But this means I’m cheating

For a long time, I wondered what kind of diet I have. I eat small amounts of meat and can go days without eating it. And I enjoy eating meat from time to time.

So, this shows, I’m not vegan, vegetarian or follow a keto or paleo diet. I don’t fit into any of these camps. I suppose some people might think I’m a bit of a fraud.

But I’m not. Lots of plant based eaters eat this way.

And so if this is you too, we can proudly say we fit into the plant based camp.

So what is a plant based diet?

When you choose to follow a plant based diet you are opting to eat foods that are mainly from plant sources. Like me, you choose to mainly eat vegetables, fruits, grains, beans and lentils (legumes).

This doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to eat animal-based foods.

You may choose to eat meat once or twice a week. Or choose to have one meal a day where you eat meat.

Whatever you choose, the way you plan your meals determines whether your diet is plant based or not.

If you plan your meals around meat or it consists mainly of meat then you’re not a plant based eater.

How do you plan your meals

So, let’s look at the Mediterranean diet. This diet focuses on eating plant-based foods. Foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts. But it also focuses on eating little amounts of animal foods.

Some meals could be more meat-based. But generally, on a daily basis, plants are eaten more than meat.

So we can see why the Mediterranean diet is plant based as the emphasis is on eating plants.

It all about balance

We’ve established that a Mediterranean diet consists of plants and a small amount of meat. And this is how I eat. This might be the way for you too.

To eat this way you need to look at your portions, that’s where the balance bit comes into it.

Most likely, and I’m assuming here!! But I’m guessing for most people, a meal typically consists of

• Carbs, such as pasta, potatoes and rice. Which will make up most of the plate.

•Followed by some form of meat. Which will make up a third of the plate

• And then very little vegetables.

A lovely meal.

But instead, you can make it look like this.

• Half of your plate could be vegetable-based.

• A quarter/or a third of your plate could be carbohydrate foods like rice, pasta and potatoes.

• And a quarter or less of your plate being meat.

This way, you’re basing your meal around plants and less on meats.
