Do you ever wonder if gentle exercises like Yoga and tai chi could help manage symptoms of chronic illness?

In this post, I’ll delve into how these practices can make a difference.

Now, with everything concerning exercise and chronic illness, we must enter into exercise with openness.

Not everything is going to work!

I’ve recently written a post about Yoga titled “Don’t Do Yoga if You Have a Chronic Illness: Essential Advice for Your Safetyโ€

Yes, an alarming title!

This came to me as I was seeing lots of posts from chronic illness sufferers being sick to the back teeth of Yoga constantly being recommended as a cure for all chronic illnesses.

As a Chronic illness sufferer diagnosed with a few chronic illnesses, I have found the physical practice of yoga to be beneficial in the past, but recently it has been the cause of many of my flare-ups.

And I say this as a trained yoga teacher!!!!

Currently, tai chi has been my saving grace.

So the key here is the openness to try and experiment with Yoga and Tai Chi to find your best fit!!

Anyway, let me tell you the benefits of Yoga as this could be a useful tool for you!!

Benefits of Yoga for Chronic Illness

Yoga, it’s just stretching, isn’t it?

Well, if you think that, think again!!!

Yoga is more than just stretching; and it’s a powerful tool for managing chronic conditions.

Yoga combines gentle movements with deep breathing techniques that can reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Regular practice can improve flexibility and balance, helping those of us with chronic pain to find relief and greater ease in daily activities. 

Tai Chi for Improving Chronic Disease Symptoms

Tai Chi involves gentle flowing movements, and like yoga, it can reduce stress and promote relaxation, so it’s another excellent option.

It originates from ancient China, and it’s known for enhancing balance and coordination.

It’s fantastic at improving mobility and increasing overall strength.

Now, as a sufferer of chronic pain suffering with arthritis and degenerative disc disease, I can attest to the benefits of Tai Chi.

People with arthritis and fibromyalgia have found Tai Chi particularly beneficial in reducing pain and improving mood. 

And I can further say, personally, I’ve benefitted from Tai Chi.

Yoga and Tai Chi Practices for Chronic Pain Relief

For people like me, suffering from chronic pain, incorporating Yoga and Tai Chi into your routine can be a game-changer.

These practices encourage mindful movement, allowing you to tune into your body and truly understand what it needs.

Now, one thing chronic pain sufferers forget is the impact of their pain on their mental well-being.

Regular practice of Yoga and Tai Chi can improve our mental clarity and emotional well-being.

So Yoga and Tai Chi are perfect companions in managing our physical discomfort but also managing our emotional wellbeing.

My Experience with Yoga and Tai Chi

Right, so why have I switched to Tai Chi?

Well, I’ve been practising yoga for many, many years, 25 years to be exact.

And I still practice yoga, but my yoga practice these days looks very different to my practice 10 years ago.

An hour yoga practice is out the door, and now it’s more of a 10-minute yoga practice with more emphasis on breathing techniques!

And yes, Yoga or any form of exercise can be 10 minutes.

The reason for 10 minutes is due toโ€ฆ

โ€ฆchronic pain.

Degenerative disc disease and arthritis now mean I struggle standing, sitting, twisting and side bending, something that many yoga classes and yoga practices incorporate.

But Tai Chi is mainly done standing, a huge benefit for me!

So no need to be on the floor!!!!

And the beautiful side of both practices is their shared use of the breath, so I feel the same mindful benefits from Tai Chi as I did with Yoga.

So if, like me, you’ve had to give up Yoga you may find Tai Chi a great alternative to a Yoga class!

Mindful Movement for Managing Chronic Conditions

As mentioned earlier, Yoga and Tai Chi give us something unique.

They beautifully blend physical activity and mindfulness.

This combination is key to managing our chronic illnesses.

These practices focus on breathing which can foster a calming effect on both your body and mind.

This is something often neglected in other forms of exercise!

So if you’re looking for a more holistic approach to managing your chronic illness, Yoga and Tai Chi could be for you!!

Don’t dismiss their impact!

Yoga and Tai Chi may look like simplistic movements.

But although small, you can experience the big impact of small, mindful movements.

So go give them a try!!!

Your path to wellness might just start on the Yoga mat or with a Tai Chi flow!
