Why Fiber is the Unsung Hero of Health and Wellness

Fiber plays a crucial role in maintaining our health.

Fiber also plays a huge role in helping people diagnosed with chronic illness.

We all know we should be getting in more Fiber but for some reason, it’s been shoved to the side.

Why?

Well, I believe it’s due to Fiber not being as sexy as other nutrients.

Vitamins, minerals and herbs are sexy, aren’t they?

Fiber just isn’t!

We seek to only think about fiber with its role in digestive disorders such as constipation.

But Fiber is so much more than constipation.

My childhood.

As a child, fiber would rear its head when I had issues with constipation.

Living in a Caribbean household meant that constipation was met with a dose of Epsom Salts, apples and Weetabix (a wheat-based cereal product).

As soon as constipation struck, the Epsom Salts, apples and Weetabix appeared as I wasn’t getting enough roughage.

If that didn’t do the trick, a concoction of Caribbean Bush teas was created.

Bush teas were a cure for all.

What is roughage?

So roughage is fiber.

It’s a word I used to hear a lot growing up.

You don’t hear it much now!

Roughage particularly means insoluble fiber.

This is a fiber that our bodies can’t break down.

We have two types of fiber.

One type is insoluble fiber which we can’t break down.

The other type is soluble fiber which absorbs water to become a smooth paste, making stools easy to pass out of the colon.

In other words, soluble fiber allows for a smooth poo 💩

Too much roughage (insoluble fiber) can cause constipation if we don’t drink enough water.

So a huge part of fiber intake is water!!!

So we need a blend of soluble and insoluble fiber to aid the digestive system!

The importance of fiber.

So fiber is so much more than constipation.

It plays a huge role in preventing and managing diseases such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

Adequate fiber intake aids in having a healthy heart, good circulation, balanced blood sugar levels and effective weight management.
